Eddie Gaedel Midget Pinch Hitter Probably my favorite sports story is the day a midget, Eddie Gaedel, batted in a major league game. The date was August 19, 1951. The lacklustre St. Louis Browns were hosting the Detroit Tigers in a Sunday doubleheader. Browns' owner Bill Veeck promised that anyone who bought a ticket would see a memorable sight. He was right. Gaedel, all 3'7" of him, took part in a brewery promotion between games. Gaedel, clad it a batboy's uniform bearing the number 1/8 and carrying a toy bat, made baseball history in the first inning of the second game when he batted for outfielder Frank Saucier. Jim Cain, the Detroit pitcher, nearly doubled over in laughter at the sight of Gaedel and walked him on four pitches--all of them high. Once Gaedel trotted down to first base he was replaced by pinch runner Jim Delsing. Gaedel's picture appeared in virtually every newspaper in North America the next day. That same day American League president Will Harridge banned midgets from baseball. Most of the players involved in the stunt relished their connection to it. Jim Delsing said, 'A lot of guys have hit 50 home runs in a season, but I'm the only guy who ever ran for a midget.'

Honus Wagner baseball card The most valuable sports card in the world features Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner. Printed by the American Tobacco Company in 1910, the card is quite rare. Only about 60 are known to exist. Their scarcity can be attributed to Wagner himself. A non-smoker, Wagner objected to his likeness being used to promote tobacco. The company acquiesced to Wagner's wishes and withdrew the card from production--but not before a number had entered the market. The most splendid example of the Wagner Card sold at auction in February 2007 for $2.35 million.

Ted Williams on Whats My Line Baseball's greatest hitter appears as a mystery guest on What's My Line in 1954. How impressive would Ted Williams' stats be if he didn't miss six seasons serving two stints in the Marines? This man is an American hero.

1982 Wide World of Sports closing montage Remember when this anthology program spanned the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport? The voice is Jim McKay. (To my great delight Wide World of Sports showed many excellent boxing matches in the 1970s and 1980s.)

Cassius Clay and Liberace An unlikely combination to be sure: On a 1963 Jack Paar Show, Cassius Clay (he was not yet Muhammad Ali) reads one of his self-aggrandizing poems while Liberace provides the piano accompaniment.

Howard Cosell picks Foreman to beat Ali Like most boxing fans, Howard Cosell figured 32-year-old Muhammad Ali had no chance to regain the world heavyweight title whe he stepped into the ring to face 25-year-old George Foreman in Zaire in 1974. (Ali won by an eighth-round knockout.) In 1964 Cosell picked Sonny Liston to beat Ali (then Cassius Clay) in one round. Clay won the title that night when Liston failed to come out for the seventh round.

LOU GEHRIG 1903 TO 1941 Lou Gehrig set several Major League and American League records and was voted the greatest first baseman of all time by the Baseball Writers' Association. His record for most career grand slam home runs still stands today. He was a native of New York City, and played for the New York Yankees until his career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now commonly referred to in the US as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Gehrig was known as The Iron Horse for his durability. Over a 15 season span between 1925 and 1939, he played in 2,130 consecutive games. The streak was broken when Gehrig became disabled with the fatal disease that claimed his life two years later. His streak, long believed to be one of baseball's few unbreakable records, stood for 56 years until finally broken by Cal Ripken, Jr., of the Baltimore Orioles on September 6, 1995.
