What's My Line? was the classiest game show ever to air on American television. The prize money on the show was ridiculously puny--even by the standards of the time. But no one ever tuned in to WML to see someone get rich. The attraction was the four-member panel, always an erudite bunch, trying to figure out the contestants' occupations--and, of course, trying to identify the famous mystery guest. I've added so many WML clips to this website, I figured I might as well start a group dedicated to this wonderful old show. Tags: Whats My Line

Hollywood columnist Louella Parsons is the mystery challenger on this episode of Whats My Line in 1954. She has the panel bamboozled for quite a while.

The first host of NBC's Today Show, Dave Garroway, appears as a mystery challenger on What's My Line in 1953. (It's sad to realize that the genial Mr. Garroway was a lifelong sufferer of depression who took his own life in 1982.)

Ed Sullivan was the really big mystery challenger on this episode of What's My Line. (I'm guessing this show aired on March 17, 1957--St, Patrick's Day. Hence all the allusions to Irish contestants.)

The classy and lovable Jimmy Durante was a very unsuccessful mystery guest on this January 1965 edition of What's My Line. His voice was just too recognizable! (Despite the reference to Durante's age, he would outlive three of the four panelists on this show.)

The classiest game show ever to grace the airwaves was What's My Line. In this 1959 episode Jack Benny is the mystery guest. Hilarity ensues. Why can't TV be this good nowadays?

In 1974, when Jimmy Carter was governor of Georgia, he appeared as a contestant on the syndicated version of What's My Line. He was so anonymous at the time he wasn't recognized. Two years later he'd be elected president.

Roy Campanella, the catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, appeared as a mystery guest on What's My Line in September 1953. (Campy would tragically be paralyzed in a car accident in January 1958, months after the Dodgers played their final game in Brooklyn.)

Child star Brandon De Wilde appeared as a mystery guest on What's My Line in 1954. (At the time he was getting rave reviews for his perfomance in the western Shane.) Sadly, he died as a result of injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident in 1972. He was only 30 years old.

Beautiful Ava Gardner makes her first ever television appearance as a mystery challenger on What's My Line in 1953. (Watch for Arlene Francis' potentially embarassing question about Ava's marriage. Ava was married to Frank Sinatra at the time. Their wedlock was volatile.)

From December 1964, Gene Kelly appears as the mystery challenger on What's My Line. (He certainly gets a couple of odd questions from Dorothy Kilgallen.)
