A classic knockout and a classic reaction by Benitez--much the same as when a baseball slugger knows he's hit a home run.

Benitez had a lightning fast right hand. Too bad he got a bad call against Sugar Ray Leonard. I thought the latter was ahead by points but he did not deserve the TKO call from the ref.

There were lots of great fights in the 80s and they garnered much TV coverage back then.

The interesting thing about this knockout is that while Benitiez was an excellent technical boxer, he wasn't especially known for being a big puncher.

Classico mentioned the Leonard-Benitez fight in 1979. It was a terrific exhibition of skilled boxers. Some fans disagreed with the referee (I think it was Carlos Padilla) stopping the fight with 45 seconds left in the 15th round. Perhaps. Personally I thought it was a good stoppage.

And yes, the late 1970s and early 1980s were indeed a golden age for televised boxing.
