That was an impressive deduction by John Payne--even allowing that hula hoops were an extremely popular toy of the day.

We were so easily amused back then, a kid could play with a hula hoop for hours and never get bored.

From what I've read about this fellow, he was unable to obtain a patent on the hula hoop. A friend had told him that schools in Australia used bamboo hoops in phys ed classes, so his idea wasn't original. (my elementary school had them too!) However, he was able to successfully trademark the name 'hula hoop' which made him very wealthy.

I wasn't allowed a Hula Hoop when I was a youngster. At 89 cents, it was just too much to spend for a toy.
