Ali Vs Wepner 15th Round The SI cover of Chuck Wepner I posted earlier prompted me to find this clip: The 15th round of Wepner's gallant losing effort versus Muhammad Ali in 1975. The bout took place at the Richfield Coliseum in suburban Cleveland, Ohio.

While this clip shows the courage of Wepner, it also shows that ALi was past his prime. The ALi/Clay of the 1960s would have annihilated a plodding opponent such as Wepner.

Wepner did score a knockdown of Ali in the ninth round--albeit a tainted one. Wepner accidentally stepped on Ali's foot while simultaneously landing an insignificant punch to the champion's chest that sent on off-balance Ali to the canvas. Referee Tony Perez didn't get a good look at what happened and wrongly declared the incident a knockdown.

Ali was past his prime way before this fight----he was never the same (in my opinion) after he came back in 1970. When he was banned from boxing for 3 1/2 years from 1967 to 1970, he was a shadow of his former self. He had lost speed, his step...all of it. He was never the same fighter.

Don't forget that Ali had already fought Joe Fraiser by this time as well---the Thrilla in Manilla had already taken place. That took a LOT out of both fighters.

In the batter-late-than-never category, in a comment to this post made nearly three years, Taxman said this fight took place ofter the Ali-Frazier Thrilla in Manila.

Nope. Ali-Wepner occurred in March 1975. Ali-Frazier III took place six months later.
