The Man Who Inspired Rocky Chuck Wepner's surprisingly good showing against Muhammad Ali in 1975 inspired Sylvester Stallone's Rocky. Here is Wepner on the cover of Sports Illustrated prior to the Ali bout.

Wepner, who hailed from Bayonne, NJ, had one of the great, unflattering sports nicknames: The Bayonne Bleeder.

Out of curiosity, what is he doing now?

I couldn't find too much on Chuck Wepner's recent happenings:

Wepner will celebrate his 70th birthday in February.

He was arrested for mail fraud in connection with a fake sports memorabilia ring and spent one day in jail. He was forging Muhammad Ali's signature on items!

I just saw a documentary about Wepner. He's a little hard to figure.

Wepner sued Sylvester Stallone for being inspired by his fight 1975 versus Ali and using it for Rocky. (To me it's an absurd premise for a lawsuit: If someone is your inspiration, you owe that person for your success?) Stallone settled out of court, more out of pity for the down-on-his-luck Wepner than for any merit the lawsuit had.

According to the ESPN documentary, Ali played a nasty trick on Wepner. To use the racial angle to hype the fight, Ali privately told Wepner to use the dreaded n-word. Wepner refused. Nevertheless when Ali and Wepner appeared together on the Mike Douglas show, Ali told Mike that Wepner disparaged him with that term. Wepner has spent the rest of his life denying something that truly never happened.
