Thomas Hearns Vs Pipino Cuevas Classico referred to this fight in his comments about my Hearns-Duran post. This is Thomas Hearns defeating Pipino Cuevas in just two rounds on August 2, 1980 in Detroit to win the WBA version of the world welterweight championship. Why Pipino Cuevas, a long-reigning champion, was defending his title in Hearns' hometown is a mystery to me.

Interesting comments by the announer about Hearns' boxing shoes. During the preliminary fights, many of the fighters were slipping on the slick canvas. Hearns' footwear seemed much more suited to the conditions than Cuevas'.

Regardless of the footwear, Hearns totally outclassed Cuevas. Did Pipino land a telling punch at all in this fight?
