This was arguably Thomas Hearns' finest moment in the ring. After he had been knocked out by Ray Leonard in 1981, Hearns went through 30 months of being a very cautious (read boring) fighter, preferring to box at a safe distance rather than mix it up. Hearns' decision to duke it out with the scary Roberto Duran was a pleasant surprise for boxing fans.

I forgot to mention on the other video/thread that Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy teamed up as reporters for ABC's fights from the late 70s to early 80s.

Roberto (No Mas) Duran never was one for good boxing defense. He stood up straight and did not know how to clinch when he got into trouble (this was the fist thing I learned in my amateur boxing days which, trust me, were very brief!).

While the Hit Man shined in this match, I though his 2 round KO of Pepino Cuevas in 1980 was an even bigger accomplishment. Cuevas was in his prime and was champ for 4 consecutive years. And the fight was very special to me as I had predicted an early KO. Boxing has always been very special to me as it usually is to a kid growing up in the streets of Brooklyn.

Good comments, Classico. (Although I believe Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy were CBS' announcers, not ABC's.)
