Franklin Half Dollar From 1948 through 1963, some 510 million American half dollars bearing the portrait of Benjamin Franklin were minted. They were replaced by Kennedy half dollars in 1964. I've never understood why half dollars fell out of favor as an everyday currency. To me they seem at least as practical as quarters.

I think America should do what your Canada did like you said Lava, just eliminate the paper dollar and make them use the coin dollar.

I say get rid of the penny and bring back the half dollar. Also they should bring back the big silver dollars. The Susan B dollar was too much like the quarter.

I'll bet the vending machine industry had something to do with the demise of the half-dollar. The fewer coins it accepts, the simpler to configure.
