Cincinnati Redlegs From 1954 through 1959, the Cincinnati Reds of the National League were officially known as the Cincinnati Redlegs. Why the name change? McCarthyism-era hysteria linked anything called the 'Reds' to communism.

Even though they were called the Redlegs they were still referred to as the Reds if you looked at baseball linescores. Now the Tampa Bay Devil Rays want to called the Rays instead of the Devil Rays.

Redlegs! I had forgotten that they did change their names back then. Back in the 1860s it was the Red Stockings. I don't think that would be fitting today.

The Chicago White Sox were known as the White Stockings.
