The Automat Automats were a type of make your own meal cafeteria. Customers bought individual items by placing coins into slots next to the food you wanted. The coins unlocked a glass lid and you helped yourself. Automats were all the rage for a while especially during the 1950s.

There was some great fare to be had within those glass doors, really fresh, great tasting food. Not so with the more modern versions..most of the vending machines we now have should come with warning labels attached to the sandwiches.

I think I recall dining at an automat once or twice as a small child.

One advantage in eating at an automat was there was no waiter or waitress to tip!

When I was young I thought automats were so futuristic.
