Howard Cosell SI Cover Renowned broadcaster Howard Cosell graced the cover of this August 8, 1983 issue of Sports Illustrated. Cosell was already a bit of a has-been by then. Cosell had sworn off pro boxing in 1982. By the end of 1983 he would leave ABC's Monday Night Football broadcasting team too. The 1984 Summer Olympics would be Cosell's broadcasting swansong. He left a legacy of excellence and honesty. You either loved Cosell or hated him. He was regularly voted the most popular sports broadcaster in America--and he was regularly voted the most hated sports broadcaster in America.

This man is known the world over because he had one of the most recognisable voices to grace the radio or the small screen.

He really brought sports journalism from the sports page to the front page.

Cosell had as many critics as admirers. After this issue was circulated, an upset reader wrote to the magazine to say he didn't want to see 'the south end of a northbound mule' on SI's cover ever again.
