She met and dated military aviator Richard I. Bong in 1943. When he returned to combat, he put her picture on his plane rather than one of the pinup girl paintings known during the war as "nose art." And when Bong became the top U.S. air ace of the war, his girlfriend's image became famous throughout the United States. After he returned from the front, the two had a storybook marriage. . . I live 2 miles from where most of those were built Willow Run Airport Yankee Air Museum burned down 2 years ago so sad there gonna rebuild though Lots of memoriabilia lost including hundreds of pics of this artwork on them
