Battle of Passchendaele 70th Anniversary Survivors of the appalling First World War Battle of Passchendaele gather at the site 70 years later in 1987. (For my money, the First World War was the most dreadful conflict in human history. Imagine, a battle to gain five muddy miles that cost 250,000 casualties!) Sixteen thousand Canadians were among the killed or wounded.

So great were the sacrifices of Allied troops in Belgium during that war that even today a minute of silence and a trumpet salute is still played every day at the Menin Gate.

Surely the phrase, 'cannon fodder' must have been applied to this darkest of the world conflicts?
