Smokin Joe and Ali! Now those were the days! How many fights did those two have over the years? I remember the Thrilla from Manilla. Was too young to stay up, remember asking my Mom in the morning. Who won the fight! Thanks lava!

Ali and Frazier fought three times. This was their first encounter. Frazier won a unanimous decision and retained his world heavyweight title. Frazier lost the title to George Foreman in 1973. Ali also lost to Ken Norton. So when Ali and Frazier met in 1974, it was a 'crossroads' fight. This time Ali won a 12-round decision. Ali stunned everyone by beating Foreman in October 1974 to regain the title. He defended it against Frazier in Manila in September 1975. Ali won when Frazier did not answer the bell for the 15th round.

Thanks for the update Lava, I thought there were three fights. Can you imagine if they had pay per view then????

As you said, Steve, pay-per-view didn't exist during the Ali-Frazier era, but closed-circuit theatre telecasts certainly did. People filled theatres all over the world to see these great competitors do their things. The 41 rounds these two guys fought may have been the pinnacle of heavyweight boxing.
