Space Age Lodge in Gila Bend Arizona circa 1960s Another of those tacky motels that appeared across America. This one is in Gila Bend, Arizona (pronounced Hee-La) This motel is southwest of Phoenix on the way to Mexico and took its que from the popularity of the space craze in the early sixties. The hotel was shut down for many years and recently renovated and is even tackier. I wasn't aware that it had been renovated until I went looking for pics of it in the 60's. I drove by this area a few years ago and it was abandoned.

Naomi, You'd be surprised at the amount of mountains we actually have here in Arizona. This area of Arizona is flat but we are one of the Mountain States. For example, Phoenix is in a valley surrounded by mountains and Tucson is too. And one third of our state is ponderosa pine forest land with elevations of 7000 feet and higher. Back in the 19th century, the Calvary tried using camels here for a while instead of horses, and while camels are great in sand, they could not endure the desert mountains and rugged desert terrain that we have here.
