From 1957, comedian Ernie Kovacs appears as a surprise mystery challenger on What's My Line. At the time, Kovacs was a semi-regular panelist on the show. (Kovacs was supposed to be in Hollywood that Sunday, but he missed his train and decided to be a WML contestant instead!) True story..Ernie Kovacs dated my Aunt Jeanine in the late 30s or early 40's, he wanted to marry her. They double dated with my mom and dad a couple of times until my dad told her he thought Kovacs was a bum and he did not want her getting involved with him. That was the end of that. She never even questioned him. How things have changed over the years.
Kovacs is nearly forgotten today, but he was an innovatinve comedian whose sketches often relied on ad-libbed humor. David Letterman has said that Ernie Kovacs' work greatly influenced him. Kovacs was so far ahead of his time that he wasn't generally appreciated by the public during his short lifetime--although TV critics widely praised his work. Kovacs was killed in a single-car accident in Los Angeles ten days before his 43rd birthday.
This is a great post. As much as I know about Ernie I have never seen this! Where'd you get it?
