It doesn't sound like a lot of money but the CPI Inflation Calculator (see friends on left of page) says:

$500 = $3,691.12
$2,000 = $14,764.47

So I would say that was pretty good considering what they earned playing for the team!

Home Run Derby is a sports classic. It only ran for one season because the host died suddenly of a heart attack. Nevertheless, the roster of star players who participated is impressive!

The show was filmed at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. (That's right, there was a Wrigley Field in L.A.!) One of sports' great mysteries was who the catcher was. He was never identified.

Home Run Derby gained a new audience in the 1980s when ESPN started airing reruns.
