Family Feud had been on the air for nine years. In its last couple of years its ratings sagged badly. The producers tinkered with the format with disastrous results. The number of points needed to win the game was increased. This resulted in the show being more rushed, thus eliminating a lot of the witty banter between Dawson and the contestants. There were also the awful celebrity editions--a sure sign a game show is on its last legs.
