lightning storm that engulfed an erupting volcano Few sights in nature can compare to the sheer magnificence of a volcano erupting in full flow. But while scenes of molten lava are relatively commonplace, this otherworldly picture of Chaiten Volcano in southern Chile shows a truly spectacular, and devastating, volcanic phenomenon.

OMG, look at the power within this eruption! It's an awesome sight, and very scary.

After more than 9,000 years of silence, this volcano erupted on May 2, 2008. The plume of ash and steam rose 35,000 to 55,000 feet into the atmosphere, reported the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program. According to news reports issues by the AFP news service, ash blanketed the town of Chaiten, 10 kilometers away, forcing the town’s 4,000 people to evacuate by boat.

Nature's power is truly awesome. Humanity cannot possibly compete with the earth's natural forces. As George Carlin once noted, 'The planet could shake us off like a bad case of fleas.'
