Upon second glance and a blown up photo, it does look like something oval!! But why in the world would he be holding a cookie in his mouth like that? I know, I should get a life, but this is a strange photo lol
I thought that for a moment too. I think it's a big round cookie, but I could be wrong. The girl seems to be holding a bag. I think the Babe helped himself to a cookie from it.
Ruth appeared in numerous publicity photos during his heyday. He didn't seem to care if he looked silly. Being photographed with a cookie dangling from his mouth wouldn't have bothered Ruth at all.

I used to think that the reason things looked bigger as a kid is that we were small. A bit of research on products around then and today showed they have gotten smaller in weight and size to keep them looking more affordable but really I find it annoying. Things ain't what they used to be.
I was at the National Baseball Hall of Fame last week and this photo was part of the Babe Ruth exhibit. I can say with total certainty that Ruth has a cookie in his mouth--not a cigar.
