Given the fact that Great Britain was standing alone against Nazi Germany in 1940 after all of continental western Europe fell, I'd say Churchill's statement rings very true. To borrow another of Churchill's phrases, it was Britain's finest hour.

I still see this as being true, especially in so called social programs.

Don't ask what your country can do for you, as these guys didn't. Duty was all and still is, to most forces today.
