It's hard to believe so many hord core drugs were available OTC. My mom used to treat my general pains with paregoric, which came in a small bottle OTC...it contained opium!! No wonder I was such a happy kid!

Indeed, Naomi. Several months ago I posted a photo of a bottle of over-the-counter heroin. It was marketed as a children's cough medication!

A wee answer for donmac: Yes, Coca-Cola supposedly used coca leaves in its recipe--hence, its name. This allegedly stopped sometime around 1906. But since Coca-Cola's recipe is one of the world's best kept secrets, who knows for sure?

Thanks Lava. I can remember as a kid that they had to remove an ingredient or two. One used to get those tarnished pennies clean the other when taken in combination with certain drugs would increase the high.
