For years Muhammad Ali claimed he tossed his gold medal from Rome into the Ohio River in a fit of anger when he encountred racism in his hometown of Louisville after the Olympics. In 1996 the IOC issued him a replacemnt medal. Not long afterward he confessed that he had simply mislaid the original gold medal from 1960.
