Cassius Clay Says He Is The Greatest It's February 22, 1964 in Miami Beach. Cassius Clay has just pulled off a monumental upset of feared titlist Sonny Liston to become the new world heavyweight champion. He proceeds to tell the folks watching at the closed-circuit venues how great he is.

I grew up with him being the champion of the world. Kind of hard to see him on TV in his present state.

I must have seen seven or eight championship boxing cards at closed circuit venues between 1981 and 1988. I miss those days. There was something exciting about going to a theatre or an arena with hundreds of other boxing fans to watch the action on big screens.

probably the last fight he was called cassius.

He punched an opponent who kept calling him Cassius till he called him Muhammad Ali.

Yes, this was his last fight as Cassius Clay. The next day he announced that he was denouncing his 'slave name' and wanted to be referred to as 'Cassius X.' Shortly thereafter he decided to call himself Muhammad Ali. I have a few Ring magazines from that era. They called him Cassius X. Clay for a while.
