It's February 22, 1964 in Miami Beach. Cassius Clay has just pulled off a monumental upset of feared titlist Sonny Liston to become the new world heavyweight champion. He proceeds to tell the folks watching at the closed-circuit venues how great he is. Tags:CassiusClayinterview Added: 26th April 2008 Views: 164 Rating: Posted By:Lava1964
I must have seen seven or eight championship boxing cards at closed circuit venues between 1981 and 1988. I miss those days. There was something exciting about going to a theatre or an arena with hundreds of other boxing fans to watch the action on big screens.
Yes, this was his last fight as Cassius Clay. The next day he announced that he was denouncing his 'slave name' and wanted to be referred to as 'Cassius X.' Shortly thereafter he decided to call himself Muhammad Ali. I have a few Ring magazines from that era. They called him Cassius X. Clay for a while.
