Hoover Wagon During the Great Depression, many rural automobile owners could not afford gasoline. These resourceful folks just hitched up their horses to their vehicles. The unusual vehicles were derisively called Hoover Wagons after president Herbert Hoover, who was America's chief executive when the Great Depression began.

Y'know, we live so far out in the country we could actually do this and get away with it, but I think I'd rather just have a horse and buggy. I wonder if they'd let me tie them up at WM?? Then again...I know from past experiences how much horses eat every day, I think we'll just stick with gas at $3.29.

The way our gas/petrol prices are going in the UK. this will soon be an everyday sight. Our fuel is $10 a gallon and rising.

Yeah, Us Americans are cry babies.A friend I met from London years ago said the petrol was so cheap in the states, while everyone was crying here about prices of fuel.( WE HAVE BIGGER CONCERNS!)He said We drive Mini's and it's $5 a gallon (litre) conversion. We don't need fossil fuel to run auto's and alot of machinery,it's corporations profiting!!Put the right tire (tyre) pressure in,change filters and oil, don't idle unecessarily.you'll save big bucks on gas in the long run.I got my driver's license during the 1st fuel crisis.$1 a gallon, people got murdered over gas!If you adjust 1970's wages, mpg to today I bet overall gas is cheaper now then it was then!

I kind of cheated when I posted this photo. It was actually taken in Canada sometime in the 1930s, but we had Hoover Wagons too. They were called Bennett Buggies after Canadian prime minister R.B. Bennett.

With gasoline at $1.10 per litre in Canada this weekend--about a 40% jump from last year--these things may indeed make a comeback.
