Charlie Chaplin Eats His Shoe The Gold Rush (1925) provided many famous scenes for Charlie Chaplin. This one was terrific. Faced with starvation, Charlie and fellow propector Big Jim McKay (Mack Swain) boil one of Charlie's shoes for a Thanksgiving meal. (Charlie had a confectioner make a shoe out of licorice for this scene.)

That's Chaplin himself doing the narration at the beginning of this scene. The film was re-released in 1942 with narration by Chaplin. He also composed the musical score for the re-release. He wrote, directed, and of course starred in the film too.

I remember watching this as a kid, I'm so glad to finally find out the shoe wasn't real!
