From 1947 thorugh 1970, Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour gave aspiring performers a chance to display their talents in front of a television audience. (Viewers were encouraged to vote for their favorite acts--by postcard!) This is a 1967 Ted Mack clip of eight-year-old Irene Cara singing.

show on CBS?


Even then..she showed her prowesses

as a performer.

Actually it's from 1965 when she was six. She was also in the musical The Me Nobody Knows, and a year later she was on The Electric Company as one of the Short Circus.

Eric, I'm curious: Do you have a source that says Irene Cara was six in this clip? The caption on the clip says she's eight years old. At the start of the clip Ted Mack says Irene is in the third grade. Just as the clip ends he says she's eight. She looks to be about eight. (She has her adult front teeth.) Inquiring minds want to know.

Lava, Irene Cara was born in 1959. which makes her at that clip six years old. She's been claiming for the past couple of years that she was born in 1964. If she was born as she claim in '64, she would've been two. That same clip can be found on youtube.com if you key in her name. I looked up her birthdate from a book that was a yearbook of plays that was on Broadway in 1969-70.

Yes, Eric, based on what I've found so far, 1959 seems to be the generally accpeted year of birth for Irene Cara.
