People forget how enormously popular this show was. The four highest-rated 30-minute sitcom episodes in American TV history were all 1964 Beverly Hillbillies episodes. Some 50 million people used to watch this every week.

Greatest TV show ever. I wrote a paper in college about it. It was more than a TV show, it was a work of art. It was symbolic of the cultural shift from a rural to an urban society in the 20th century. One of my favorite aspects of the show was how the city folks thought the hillbillies were so dumb, but the only really stupid one was Jethro, the educated one.

Not merely a TV show, more like a phenomenon, an institution! It is in the same class up there with Green Acres and Andy Griffith. We are fortunate to have had such shows in our collective psyche.
