One of my favorite boxers, exciting world featherweight champion Danny (Little Red) Lopez, was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated on February 12, 1979--29 years ago today. In today's repressive, politically correct society, there's no way SI would run that photo and use that caption. It generated no complaints in 1979, though.

He was one of my faves from that era - and a great era in boxing it was!
While the portrayal is politically incorrect, it should also be noted that no one would dare strike such a pose today. After all, he would stand to lose more estimation from Native Americans than from anyone else.

I believe Danny Lopez's ancestry was at least 50 percent 'Native American' (a term I dislike), so if anyone should be allowed to wear a headdress on a magazine cover, it should be Lopez.
Lopez also wore a headdress into the ring. I've posted Lopez's 1978 title defense aagainst Juan Malvarez. He can be seen wearing it after scoring a knockout.

According to Lopez's Wikipedia biography, his ancestry is 'Ute Indian, Mexican and Irish.'
