Great Britain's Roger Bannister was the cover subject of this issue of Sports Illustrated. Bannister was being honored as SI's first-ever Sportsman of the Year for famously shattering the four-minute mile in May 1954 with a time of 3:59.4. People tend to forget that Bannister only held the world record for a few weeks. Australia's John Landy whittled the record down to 3:58 flat in June 1954.
