There is now available digitized manifests from passenger ships entering the United States between 1820 and 1960.
This search works, I was able to find both sides of my family on their original manifest list, and so much more information, including the ship they sailed on and who was waiting for them at their destination.

TRUE,I began a trial discount search on Ancestry.com.I seen ship manifests from Ellis Island, census records, ages, names, births, deaths, newspaper articles,etc...You could zoom in letter by letter,on hard to read documents etc...I need to follow up overseas. It became quite involved because I have a common name, that would be costly and time consuming to research from the beginning.

What makes it a painstaking search though is knowing you'll be working with some names that were NOT spelled correctly, and having to check each possibility! About drove me bonkers!

Yes,I'm aware of how names were shortened and misspelled.Mine is so common. It's like finding a Lee in China that has eaten rice.No offense BRUCE!

I'll give it another try, many in my family have tried and failed due to phonetically spelling the name. I'm sure cursive writing didn't help any either!
