Sal Mineo 1970 Appearance on Whats My Line Earlier I posted Sal Mineo's mystery guest appearance on the original What's My Line in 1957. Nobody figured out who he was. Thirteen years later Sal's the mystery guest again on the syndicated version. Again the panel is stumped.

The last time I remember seeing him was in 'Exodus' in 1960, ..wow, what a great film!

Mineo died very young, he was only 37 when he was murdered. He had been starring as a gay burgler in a stage play in San Francisco, for which he received alot of publicity and positive reviews, then moved on with the play to Los Angeles. One night, while arriving at his home, he was stabbed to death in the alley behind a West Hollywood apartment building. He was stabbed just once, but the blade struck directly into his heart, leading to immediate and massive internal bleeding.

According to the book, 'Outing: Shattering the Conspiracy of Silence', he was murdered under circumstances that suggested a homosexual motive. He came out as being bisexual in a 1972 interview, published after his death in 1976, but his biography stated that he dated men exclusively in the last years of his short life.

From what I've read about Mineo's untimely death, he was stabbed to death by a drifter in a robbery. The perpetrator had no idea who he was robbing.

'Although there was considerable confusion relating to what witnesses had seen in the darkness the night Mineo was murdered, Williams was reported to have boasted of the crime, which turned out to be a botched mugging. At the time of the murder, Williams had no idea who Mineo was.'

'So they believed the word of a murderer? C'mon give me a break.
If he didn't know he had killed a celebrity, why in the world would he be boasting' about it?
