Greta Garbo and John Gilbert Greta Garbo and John Gilbert, the queen and king of silent romantic movies, in "Flesh and Devil," 1927. She reigned in the talkies as well, but he became one of the casualties of sound, not so much because his voice was thin, but because talking-picture audiences no longer wanted romantic heroes, preferring tough guys. . .

I think Gilbert and Garbo were so perfect together, like Bogey and Bacall, Wayne and O'Hara, Tracy and Hepburn.

The romantic chemistry between Garbo and Gilbert was a director's dream because it wasn't put on. The two of them quickly became involved in their own affair and before production of the film was complete, they'd already moved in together. Hollywood legend has it that it was also during production that Gilbert proposed to Garbo, she accepted, a high-profile wedding was arranged, but then Garbo backed out. 'Flesh and the Devil' marked the beginning of one of the most famous romances of Hollywood's golden age. Garbo and Gilbert would also continue making movies together into the Sound Era, though, as Teresa has stated, Gilbert's career would collapse in the early 1930s, while Garbo's soared.
