Chip and Dale first came into their own when Disney was looking for another foil for Donald Duck. Chip and Dale were the answer. These two became Donald's most popular and enduring adversaries. Although always together, they have quite distinct personalities. Dale was certainly the more capricious and flutter-witted of the two, and the slightly more logical Chip frequently had to bring him back in line, even if by force. Luckily, this behavior didn't create any ill feelings between the two, nor did it divert them from their main aim in life: to amass as vast a stockpile of food as possible.
