Olga Korbut 1972 Olympics I can't honestly claim to be a gymnastics fan, but even I was captivated by Olga Korbut in 1972. Prior to the Munich Olympics, the world's dominant female gymnasts were mature, balletic-type women. Korbut ushered in the era of pixie-like pubescent teenage gymnasts.

I remember hearing a gymnastics commentator say that before Olga Korbut came along they couldn't get 200 people to attend a gymastics meet. After Munich, gymnastics events were guaranteed sellouts.

She was an amazing gymnast, especially for her age. She had such a promising future. Then later on in 2002, she was charged with shoplifting and was also being investigated after $30,000 in counterfeit money was found in an abandoned house that she had previously owned and whose last occupant was her son.

The trouble with Olympic gymnasts and other young stars is that their athletic careers are pretty much over by the time they're in their early twenties. They have to adapt to the real world. Some don't do well.

I can assure you that gymnastics could always manage to get over 200 people per match in the old days. And it still does!

That Russian 1972 team was awesome with Olga, Ludmilla Tourischiva, and Tamara Lazakovich. I'm a huge women's gymnastics fan and can readily affirm that careers are far too short. Today, Olga is coaching in Arizona, Ludmilla coached successfully for many years in Russia. Tragically, Tamara was already an alcoholic by the age of 15 and died of acute alcoholic poisoning before she was 40.
