1946 Microwave Oven Ad And this is a cheap one!! Commercial microwaves were another story!! . . . "in 1947, the first commercial microwave oven hit the market. These primitive units where gigantic and enormously expensive, standing 5 1/2 feet tall, weighing over 750 pounds, and costing about $5000 each."

Wow, and it took 40 years to catch on? They really didn't hit the homes until the 80s!

My dad got my mom a MONSTER Panasonic one in the early 80's. Darn thing cost him about $350. They didn't come down much.

I never knew they had microwave ovens that long ago?

Yes it's true that in 1947 Amana marketed the first Radarange microwave oven. But this ad is clearly not from the 1940's - or the 1950's for that matter. First of all the woman's outfit defies any sort of 1940 fashion and the Zip code for the Crystal Mgf. Company places the ad no earlier than July, 1963. And a quick search indicates International Crystal Manufacturing Co. is still going strong-! But it's great to see an ad for another early maker of microwave ovens other than Amana or Litton. Thanks for this post.
