America Comes of Age The 1920s The 1920's, a decade of dissipation, of jazz bands, raccoon coats, bathtub gin, flappers, flagpole sitters, bootleggers, marathon dancers, and bathing beauties. A decade when America truly came of age.

I always thought the 1920s were an interesting time in American history. The flapper lifestyle and fast times were a rebellion against the Victorian social mores that existed up until the First World War. The 1920s were also a time of contradictions. Despite growing liberal attitudes affecting much of America, Calvin Coolidge, the most conservative person to ever be in the White House, was president. Most people people consumed alcohol but publically supported Prohibition--for a while, anyway. Interesting times indeed.

I think this was the biggest change to society until the hippies of the 60s.
