Here's a little interesting trivia about Satchmo:
An interest in music came early for him, but because the family was so poor, he borrowed money from a family named Karnofsky, a Russian-Jewish immigrant family. With it he bought and learned to play his first cornet, in the band of the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs, where he had been sent several times for general delinquency, mainly for a long term after firing his stepfather's pistol into the air at a New Year's Eve celebration. To express his gratitude towards the Karnofskys for helping him to get started with his music, Armstrong wore a Star of David pendant for the rest of his life.
