Shirley Temple Dances with Buddy Ebsen Shirley Temple and Buddy Ebsen dance 'At The Codfish Ball.' This is from the movie Captain January (1936). Given the huge disparity in size between the two of them, this must have been a tough number to choreograph! Apparently Shirley learned the routine perfectly in about an hour.

The two of them nearly co-starred in The Wizard of Oz in 1939. Buddy originally was cast as the Tin Man, but he was terribly allergic to the make up and had to be replaced by Jack Haley. Everyone thought Shirley would play Dorothy, but 20th Century Fox wouldn't release her to MGM to play the role.

There was a special about this on TCM not too long ago. It seems that a few weeks into the shooting of the film, Buddy developed what turned out to be an allergic reaction to the pure aluminum dust that was used by the makeup department to give his skin that metallic appearance. He spent the next couple of weeks in the hospital in an oxygen tent. If anyone is interested, he's written a great autobiography entitled The Other Side of Oz.

Buddy was a staunch Republican and refused to endorse Nancy Culps bid for the Democrats which aggrieved her.

I also get the impression Dixie was never in his heart.
