In 1955, Bo Diddley became the first African American performer to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. Apparently Sullivan was infuriated when Diddley sang this, his self-titled song instead of what was planned, Tennessee Ernie Ford's hit, "Sixteen Tons".

It must've been huge to defy Ed Sullivan.
This was still in the times of segregation. sullivan could've called him a no good field nig*** and destroyed him.
I'll just say what Bo Diddley did took extreme fortitude.
