That sure is a devastating serve that guy had in 1913--and he was a Davis Cup player!

I grew up with wooden racquet. it was a whole different game. You had to craft points rather than just try to blow your opponent off the court with power.
Having said that, today's game is way more competitive than it ever has been. I recall Tony Trabert say that back in the 1950s, when the top events were still restricted to amateurs, if you were any good at all you would get to the quarterfinals of the French, Wimbledon, and US championships. That's how thin the competition was 65 years ago.
