London Blitz Photo - 1940 A photo is indeed worth 10,000 words sometimes. Here's a great example: A young girl sits outside her shattered London home after a German air raid in 1940.

Wow. We really don't know what we truly have.

When I was in London in 1987 one of the first things I did was get on a tour bus. It seemed that many of the historic sites the guide pointed out included the phrase '...heavily damaged during the war.' I was really startled by how many buildings in London still have damaged brick work and other scars of the Second World War.

In 1971 I visited London for the first time and found sections of the city still bombed-out devastated. London was rebuilding, but the job had not been finished a quarter-century later. Wooden fences kept the rubble in place. I later learned what cost was involved in prosecuting the war to victory and how so many projects were moved down the list to allow Britain to pay back that war debt. It got done, and today's London stands as testament to English determination.
