2011 Stanley Cup Riot Commentary One of the most embarrassing episodes in Canadian history: On June 15, 2011, the Boston Bruins soundly defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 to win the Stanley Cup in the seventh game of the finals in Vancouver. Disappointed Canucks fans and mindless hooligans (those two terms may be interchangeable) did not accept the defeat well. They laid waste to Vancouver's downtown--much as they did in 1994 when the Canucks lost in the finals to the New York Rangers! The following night on CBC's National News, commentator Rex Murphy bluntly expressed his disgust with the rioters.

As a lifelong Boston Bruins fan living in Canada, the day after the game should have been wonderful for me. It was the first time in 39 years Boston had won the Stanley Cup. Instead, no one focused on the game. Everyone was talking about the brain-dead goons who trashed Vancouver.

One of the punks who was eventually convicted was a member of Canada's junior national water polo team.

Those so-called fans who thrashed Vancouver aren't fans but a bunch of jock sniffers who have have no knowledge, history,or support of the team.

On one Canadian sports website the common refrain was, 'The rioters aren't really Vancouver Canuck fans.' One rebuttal was, They were when the game started!'
