Barney Miller Actor Steve Landesberg dies Steve Landesberg may have been best known for his role as the intellectual and sometimes annoying Detective Sgt. Arthur Dietrich on the long-running 1970s cop comedy "Barney Miller." But younger audiences knew him too for a slew of recent parts such as the doctor on the 2008 hit movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." The veteran actor died Monday at age 65, his agent, Jeffrey Leavitt, told The Associated Press apparently from cancer.

The inspector was played by James Gregory who passed away back in 2002 at the age of 90.

I agree with OldenGoldie. I enjoyed Mr. Landesberg's dry style of humor.

After Barney Miller went off the air, Mr. Landesberg became a commercial spokeman for Canadian Airlines (which has since been absorbed into Air Canada).

According to recent reports, Landesberg was 74 years old when he died (being born in 1936), not 65. His daughter claimed he shaved nine years off his age because he got a late start in acting.
