Congratulations to all Canadians! We applaud the victory.

Heck of a game, indeed! Kudos to them and to your girls team as well for winning the gold.

Of course, in the summer games we'll kick your butts in basketball, and a whole slew of other sports. But that's another story.

;)

I have to admit Lava, you were the first one I thought of when the won!

Thanks! You wouldn't believe the mayhem here. Nobody will get to work tomorrow.

Classico is probably right: Canada has never won a gold medal in a team sport at the summer Olympics. That's why we enjoy our successes in the winter games.

Slight correction: Canada did win the soccer gold medal in St. Louis 1904--and it was a team from my hometown. (How silly of me to forget!) But it's been a long time between Olympic championships...

No gold in summer Olympics? Didn't know that.

Perhaps we should make lacrosse a summer Olympic game. You should have a better chance with that one!

Has there been a player who has won in the same year an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup?

Hmm...Sidney Crosby won the Stanley Cup last season and the Olympic gold yesterday. I'll have to do some research on that question.

Classico: Lacrosse was a demonstration sport in 1908 in London. Canada won the tourney, but it was held several months after the rest of the Games. I imagine it was hardly an Olympic experience for the participants.

Players who have won an Olympic gold medal and Stanley Cup in the same season:

Ken Morrow 1980 (USA and New York Islanders)
Brendan Shanahan 2002 (Canada and Detroit Red Wings)
Steve Yzerman 2002 (Canada and Detroit Red Wings)

Great Tournament! Great for Canada. Ya got to give our American boys credit! Loved every minute of it! When we tied it at 24. 44 seconds sending it into overtime. Yup Awesome!!

Thanks Lava. That would make a good sports trivia question.

To give you some indication of how important hockey is to the Canadian psyche and identity, here are some television numbers from Sunday's gold-medal hockey game:

Some 26.5 million Canadians watched at least part of the gold-medal game. Canada's population is about 33 million. Thus 80 percent of all Canadians saw at least part of the game. It was the most watched program in the history of Canadian television.

The average viewing audience at any part of the game was 16 million people--or nearly half of Canada's population.

By comparison, the recent Super Bowl broke all viewing records in the USA with 104 million Americans watching. That is less than one-third of the total population of the USA.

As an American did it have to be Sidney Crosby to score the goal. The last two Stanley Cup finals were between Detroit and Pittsburg. Great Job Canooks!! Please no disrespect for my great friends in Canada.
