One of the greatest movie chase scenes over filmed. There were 2 1968 390 CID Ford Mustangs used in the sequence and 2 1968 Dodge Chargers R/Ts. The first one driven by Steve McQueen and the second one was the camera chase car. After filming was completed the car driven by McQueen was so badly damaged that it was crushed to avoid any liability. The second one was sold to a Warner film editor. After changing hands a few times it is said that the second Mustang is in a barn in the Ohio River valley. Steve McQueen tried to buy the car but the owner refused saying that if he ever sold it he would give McQueen first crack at it. Sadly McQueen died in 1980 and the car currently sits in disrepair rotting away. During the sequence the Charger looses a hubcap 6 times and they pass the same green VW bug 4 times and the same blue sedan with black top 3 times. The man who lays down his motorcycle during the sequence is the stuntman who drove the Mustang for most of the filming. Bill Hickman who drove the Charger and played one of the bad guys also drove in chase scenes in the Seven Ups and The French Connection. He was also a good friend of James Dean and was first on the scene of Dean's fatal accident because he drove a station wagon and trailer that towed Dean's 550 spyder.
