Bill Lee Postgame Interview 1979 Bill (Spaceman) Lee of the Montreal Expos is interviewed on the field after pitching a shutout versus the Philadelphia Phillies at Olympic Stadium on May 30, 1979. The quirky, free-spirited Lee had grown a beard after being acquired by the Expos. Lee was an integral part of the three Expos clubs (1979, 1980, and 1981) that came oh so close to winning the National League pennant.

This guy was and is one of the best interviews in sports.

The allusion to the pancakes was meaningful: Lee had earlier been fined $50 by Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn for joking that he sprinkled marijuana on his morning pancakes. (Maybe he wasn't joking.) He then invited the Commissioner to have breakfast at his house!

Whenever I watch Bull Durham I'm convinced that Tim Robbins' patterned his character after Bill Spaceman Lee.

Spaceman! A cool character with only one fault: he hated the Yankees. He bad mouthed the Yanks during an onfield altercation between the teams. And it got him a well deserved punch in the jaw. Yes, God punishes!

Hating the Yankees is a fault?

Bill Lee was a one cool dude.

Under-rated pitcher in my book - a very good pitcher especially in Fenway. A true pitcher. And what a character... Looking back that Yankee / Red Sox rivalry had some fierce competitors.

That beard was dreadful - looked like a logger
