Mrs Columbo Opening The NBC 60-minute mystery show Mrs. Columbo lasted less than one year. It premiered on February 26, 1979 and last aired on December 6, 1979. It has a special place in TV history for having four different titles! It went from Mrs. Columbo to Kate Columbo to Kate The Detective and finally Kate Loves A Mystery. The premise was that Kate (played by Kate Mulgrew) was supposed to be the wife of Peter Falk's famed Columbo character. In his show, his wife was never seen. In Kate's show, he was never seen. Regardless of the premise or the title changes, the show failed to attract a following. Maybe a better title might have been 'Viewers Hate Kate.'

It was better to have had Mrs. Columbo not to have been seen. There were certain characters you had to imagine what they looked like.

I think they were taking a shot in the dark when they aired this. Just because everyone loved Columbo, doesn't necessarily mean they would feel the same about his wife having a show of her own, especially without even a glimpse of him once a week.

I agree with Eric: Mrs. Columbo should have remained a character in our imaginations only. To me, Kate Mulgrew seems a little too flashy to be Columbo's wife.

And I agree with Naomi. This show was trying to live off the good name of Columbo. It shouldn't work and it didn't work.
