I saw a film about her life a few months ago, made in 1982, with Jessica Lange. Apparently Frances was committed to a mental institution by her mother in the mid-forties because of what was described at the time as her increasingly erratic behavior. I've read two different accounts of this, one contradicting the other, that claims the nurses found her to be quite well balanced. She was victimized repeadedly by the staff and others and eventually underwent a lobotomy. She was released years later, but of course, was never the same after that. It's all very sad.
